Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent campaign for democracy and freedom in his homeland. The Dalai Lama has made the hillside town of Dharmsala his headquarters since fleeing from Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. His sermons on ethics, non-violence, peace and religious harmony has brought him world wide recognition. Secretary of State Antony Blinken offered warm birthday wishes and expressed admiration for the Dalai Lamas commitment to peace and nonviolence, in a statement from his office. He is also considered one of the most virtuous leader of 20th century. Since then he has spent his life in India and keeps pushing for autonomy for Tibet. He fled Tibet after a failed uprising against the Chinese rule in 1959. Born on 6 July 1935, at Taktser hamlet in northeastern Tibet, the Dalai Lama was recognised at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. A symbol of peace, compassion, and enlightenment, the Dalai Lama has touched. Revered by the Tibetans as a ‘living god’, the Dalai Lama attended the prayers and blessed the gathering. Several of the album’s songs were composed at “Big Pink,” the house in West Saugerties. . . But that last name, unlike the first two, is not all that well known, so quotation marks might be helpful for the first mention: For example, you wouldn’t use italics to refer to the White House or Graceland or Big Pink (the names of houses located respectively in Washington, DC Memphis, TN and West Saugerties, NY). ![]() But it recognizes that the possessive ending can be considered independently of the word to which it attaches, as “belonging to” would be in “the ship belonging to the pirate.” That final period, in case you’re wondering, isn’t in italics.įor italics for emphasis, see CMOS 7.50 for words used as words, see CMOS 7.63.Ī. Even in the singular, this is an extremely fine distinction that will go unnoticed by many. But for emphasis-that is, to single out the pirate’s ship as opposed to some other ship-italics are best reserved for pirate alone (as styled in this sentence, between the dashes). To refer to the possessive pirate’s as a word, you’d put the whole thing in italics (as it is styled in this sentence). The difference, however, between ’ and ’ will go unnoticed by most readers-even those of us who scrutinize such things for a living-so let’s switch to the singular to confirm our choices. For example, “It was the pirates’ ship, not mine, that sank.” But if you’re using italics for emphasis, leave the apostrophe in regular text. If you’re referring to the plural possessive form of the word pirates as a word, then italicize the whole thing, including the apostrophe: pirates’. For advice on capitalizing dog breeds, see this Q&A.Ī. For the glottal stop (or ‘okina) in po‘ouli, see CMOS 11.70 (under “Hawaiian”). In sum, sometimes it’s necessary to go beyond the dictionary as a rough gauge of a term’s familiarity in English contexts. So you shouldn’t need italics to refer to a po‘ouli except when using the name as a word (as in the first sentence above and the last sentence in your question).īut if you were to refer to, for example, a Deutscher Schäferhund-the German name for a German shepherd-italics would help signal that the German name would not normally be used in an English-language context (except, for example, to let readers know what that name is). Though it’s not listed in Merriam-Webster (as of July 5, 2022), the name po‘ouli seems to be relatively well established in recent English-language publications that discuss that bird ( sadly reported extinct in 2021) in fact, a Google search for “black-faced honeycreeper” brings up “po‘ouli” first, suggesting it’s more common now than the common English name. ![]() ![]() In all likelihood, you may already have received a PPT file from your colleagues through an email. In your cityĪt the same time, you have the opportunity to actively engage with people who are suffering from the heat. Taking shorter showers, switching to public transport and saving energy and reducing waste are also effective measures. For example, in particularly hot times you can ask your elderly neighbors if you can support them with something or by watering city trees in your neighborhood (more information here in the blog) and putting out water for birds and insects. Of course, you can start by taking action on an individual level. To cushion the consequences for you, other people and nature as much as possible, you have a variety of options. In the future, we will probably have to reckon with more hot days. This is how you can support people and nature But it can help us make more sustainable choices in our everyday lives and think about the needs of nature and other people. Of course, this change of perspective will not stop climate change. Because these help nature to regenerate and replenish its water reservoirs. For example, by understanding a foggy autumn day, a rainy winter or a cooling thunderstorm as “good weather. In other words, we should also learn to appreciate “bad weather” more. We should also think about the value of the weather for the ecological balance and nature. Talking about “nice weather” exclusively in the context of sunshine and warm temperatures only focuses on individual recreational pleasure (at the swimming lake) and leaves out nature and people suffering from the heat. Weather is not a recreational service for humans. However, in this hot summer of 2022 at the latest, it is becoming clear that we need to expand this understanding of “beautiful”. Being outside in sunny warm weather is and remains a beautiful thing, of course. Of course, it’s not about not going to the lake on sunny days or meeting friends for ice cream. What should change in our weather perception ![]() Particularly against the backdrop of climate change, they are an enormously important factor for the future climate control of urban areas. The trees in our cities are also massively endangered by the drought. The drought has already led to forest fires in many regions of Europe, and more than 600,000 hectares of forest have already fallen victim this year. Nature is also currently suffering massively from the sun and the lack of rain. Not to mention farmers, who are eagerly awaiting sufficient rain and now fear crop losses of up to 25%. In addition, there are people without shelter who have no cool rooms to retreat to. The heat is particularly hard on the health of older or weaker people. Many suffer from the heatįor many people, these hot summer days are anything but pleasant. But when the weather turns into heat extremes, as it has this summer, it becomes clear that “nice” is also a relative term. So the association of sunshine and warmth with “nice weather” is perfectly understandable. So subjectively, warm and sunny weather is really nice, because we feel fitter and more comfortable than on dark and dreary winter days, for example. This is because the days are longer, we spend a lot of time in the fresh air and the sunlight increases our serotonin levels. In summer, people usually feel better physically and mentally. ![]() Why do we talk about nice weather at all? Additionally, they can entirely take over the output device ("hog mode") giving the program exclusive access which prevents system beeps and other programs interfering with music playback. However their main advantages over iTunes for improving the quality of the computer's output is a dedicated playback engine different to the one in Mac OS X or iTunes, as well as the ability to switch the system output to the sample rate of the track being played, which is important if you have a mix of high-resolution as well as CD quality music and wish to have bit-perfect output every time. The latter is especially useful as Mac OS X has a built-in 31-band equalizer which is very handy for learning about frequency response. At the very least, they offer features not available in iTunes, such as upsampling and access to the audio filters built into Mac OS X. Many people feel that using the audiophile-oriented music players improves the sound with their equipment. This now leads the pack of the free players (after the association was dropped and the program re-named Decibel) if you want a simpler program and potentially better sound than you get using iTunes. As those two have fought it out in the commercial arena, the developer of Play came up with a free program, AyreWave, in conjunction with Ayre, which combined the simplicity of Play with high-quality 64-bit playback. Offering higher-quality playback, it has become famous among audiophiles, alongside its biggest competitor, Pure Vinyl (and now Pure Music). For a while, that was Play and one or two others, but then Amarra came on the scene. Though iTunes wiped out the need for competition when it was introduced, it has become a huge, multimedia and store program, leaving many people wanting something simpler. There seems to have been an explosion lately in "audiophile" music players for Mac OS X lately. |
